Eating and drinking

Cheap restaurants are grouped together at the bottom of Corso Cavour, though the best-value eating in the town is close to the duomo at the co-operatively run CRAMST, Via Maitani 15 (closed Sun). Deservedly popular with locals, it's a 450-seat canteen affair, offering a choice between restaurant and self-service pizzeria. Orvieto has recently spawned a whole crop of good little trattorias. La Grotta , Via Signorelli 5 (closed Mon), is good value, friendly and has been around longer than most. A touch cheaper and probably with better food to boot, is the Volpe e Uva , Via Ripa Corsica 1 (closed all day Mon & Tues lunch). Moving up a notch in price, both the Sette Consoli , Piazza Sant'Angelo 1a (closed Wed), and Osteria dell'Angelo , Corso Cavour 166 (closed Mon) are highly rated by italian foodie guides, the Osteria being the better and slightly cheaper of the two. More traditional, and guaranteed to give you a reliable meal in old-world surroundings is the Etrusca , Via Maitani 10 (closed Mon). If it's romance you're after (and money's no object), the Gigli d'Oro in Piazza del Duomo (closed Wed) offers meals in the shadow of the cathedral facade.

The wine bars around the duomo are an expensive way of sampling the well-known Orvietan white, though the wine has inevitably suffered as a result of the mass-production methods employed to satisfy the demands of the international market. The most bizarre place to drink or buy the stuff is in La Bottega del Buon Vino , halfway down the steep Via della Cava at no. 26. It's located at the extreme east end of town, near Porta Maggiore. The bottega is partly in the cave from which the street gets its name and boasts an odd funnel-shaped well into the bargain; the tiny adjoining restaurant is also okay. Finally, there's great ice cream at L'Archetto , an ivy-covered gelateria right in the main piazza, to the north side of the duomo.
