Arrival and information

Arriving on the state train network you'll find yourself to the south-west of the centre at Piazza Vittorio Veneto : from here it's a fifteen-minute ride on just about any of the buses that pull up outside the station (bus #6, #7, #9, #11 or #15 - anything to Piazza Italia or Piazza Matteotti will do). City bus tickets (valid for 20, 40 or 70min; L1200/a?¬0.60, L1400/a?¬0.72 and L1700/a?¬0.88 respectively) are available from a small booth over to the left as you exit the station. Don't walk - it's a steep haul on busy roads. If you're coming on the private FCU (Ferrovie Centrale Umbra) lines from Todi or Terni to the south, or from CittA  di Castello or Sansepolcro to the north, you'll arrive at the much more central Stazione Sant'Anna , near the bus terminal at Piazza dei Partigiani . From this large square you can jump on a scala mobile (escalator) as it wends its way through weird subterranean streets to Piazza Italia .

If you're arriving by car be prepared for hassle: all the town's approaches are up steep hills and the signposting leaves plenty to be desired. The centre is closed to traffic at peak times, and you'll do best to leave your car at the main train station and take a bus. Alternatively you could head towards one of the big peripheral car parks - Piazza dei Partigiani is the largest and most convenient.

There's a tourist office just behind the Palazzo dei Priori in the Sala San Severo at Piazza IV Novembre 3 (Mon-Sat 8.30am-1.30pm & 3.30-6.30pm, Sun 9am-1pm; tel 075.573.6458, info@iat.perugia . it ). There's also a small summer-only office at the train station (daily 8.30am-1.30pm). Both offices will provide advice on city events and help in finding accommodation. At the station and in Piazza Italia you'll see some Digiplan machines, which supply tourist information on computer print-out - great in theory but almost invariably broken. Check your email at Internet Point , Via Ulisse Rocchi 4 (Mon-Sat 10am-10pm, Sun 4-8pm; L7000/a?¬3.62 per hr, Happy Hour Mon-Sat 10am-1pm & 8-10pm; L5000/a?¬2.58 per hr; tel 0339.269.1728, www.internetpointpg.it ) behind the duomo.
