Finding your way around PA©saro is no problem - Viale Risorgimento leads from the train station to the town's main axis, Via Branca-Via Rossini-Viale della Repubblica, which cuts straight through the historical town to the beach. Bisecting it at Piazza del Popolo are Corso XI Settembre, scene of the evening passeggiata, and Via San Francesco, which leads to the bus station on Piazza Matteotti. The main tourist office (daily: summer 8am-8pm; winter 9am-1pm & 4-7pm; tel 0721.69.341), is on the seafront on Piazzale della LibertA , at the end of Viale della Repubblica

Pick of the reasonably priced and convenient hotels along the seafront are Caravelle , Viale Trieste 269 (tel 0721.370.450, www.hotelcaravelle.net ; L90,000-120,000/a?¬46.48-61.98) a light, airy place with a swimming pool, bikes, a games room, and room prices that drop by almost a half in May and September; Hotel des Bains, Viale Trieste 221 (tel 0721.34.957; L150,000-200,000/a?¬77.47-103.29), dating back to 1905 and though modernized many times since then, still with something of the a?˜belle epoque' about it; Napoleon , Viale Fiume 118 (tel 0721.31.160; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47) geared up for families with its mini-suites, play room and water slides; and Atlantic , Viale Trieste 365 (tel 0721.370.333, www.hatlantic.com ; L150,000-200,000/a?¬77.47-103.29) with a retro feel in its Fifties-style lounge. Other hotels line the avenues which run parallel to the sea: Abbazia , Viale Trento 147 (tel 0721.33.694; Apr-Sept; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48), is the budget choice though insists that you pay upfront; Clipper , Viale Marconi 53 (tel 0721.30.915; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47) is relaxed and friendly despite the old-fashioned furniture and offers an alfresco buffet breakfast on the terrace. On the edge of town on the road south to Fano, Villa Serena Via S Nicola 6/3 (tel 0721.55.211, www.egm.it ; L250,000-300,000/a?¬129.11-154.94) is an atmospheric family-owned hotel stuffed with antiques and heirlooms, with a handful of guest rooms and a swimming pool in the rambling garden. Further afield, to rent a traditional stone cottage in the Pesarese Apennines contact the co-operative La Macina (tel 0721.700.148, cooplamacina@info-net.it ). The nearest campsites to PA©saro are at Fano and at Fiorenzuola .

There's no shortage of affordable places to eat . For food on your feet, try Harnold's on Piazza Lazzarini; among pizzerias, C'era una volta , on Via Cattaneo (closed Mon), is good, cheap and popular - so long as you don't mind rustic decor and loud rock music. There's a fine ristorante/pizzeria called Pasqualon at Via G. Bruno 37 (closed Sun and first two weeks of June), or you could head instead to Cigno Bianco , Via Castelfiardo 6 (closed Wed), which bakes pizzas in a wood-fired oven and also serves full meals. Over to the east of town, Da Maria , at Via Mazzini 73 (closed Wed), is a chaotic, neighbourly trattoria specializing in fish, while Trattoria Da Sante , nearby on Via G. Bovio (closed Mon), also serves fish dishes at rock-bottom prices but has little atmosphere. The Antica Osteria La Guercia at Via Baviera 33, just off the Piazza del Popolo (closed Sun), does amazing pasta and fish dishes like mal tagliati and cece e vongole and is very reasonably priced; equally popular with locals is the fish restaurant Esedra , on the small piazza of the same name just off Via C Cattaneo (closed Mon), which serves wonderful ravioli with fresh sole and tomatoes, mixed fish kebabs and spaghetti with squid ink.
