tourist office
is by the water in the ferry terminal building (daily 9am-1pm & 3.30-6.30pm; tel 081.810.1968), close by where the buses stop; it has free maps and advice on accommodation. For
getting around
, a bus service connects Marina Grande with Chiaioella roughly every twenty minutes and coincides with all ferry and hydrofoil arrivals. There's not much choice if you want to
stay
on the island: there are only a handful of hotels, together with a couple of
pensioni
. Chiaioella is probably your best bet, where you can stay at the
Riviera
hotel, ten minutes' walk from the beach at Via G. de Procida 36 (tel 081.896.7197,
riviera@poitel.it
; L90,000-120,000/a?¬46.48-61.98) - the bus goes right by - or
El Dorado
, Via V. Emanuele 236 (tel 081.896.8005; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47), facing the sea on the eastern side of the island, an old mansion set in gardens and lemon groves.
Crescenzo
, at Via Marina Chiaiolella 33, is a three-star with a fine ristorante-pizzeria whose speciality is spaghetti with crab meat and courgette (tel 081.896.7255,
hotel_crescenzo@iol.it
; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47). If these are full, there's the
Albergo Celeste
, between the
Riviera
and the harbour on the left, at Via Rivoli 6 (tel 081.896.7488,
www.campnet.it/celeste
; L150,000-200,000/a?¬77.47-103.29). Be aware that at all of these places you
must
book in advance. For
camping
, there are five sites on the island, most within easy walking distance of the sea: try one of the two on Via IV Novembre: the
Caravella
(tel 081.896.9230; May-Sept), and the
Vivara
(tel 081.896.9242; June-Sept) - both around 200m from the sea. To get to them, take the Chiaioella bus and get off at Piazza Olmo.
Eating
is rather easier. In Marina Grande, restaurants line the waterfront Via Roma:
La Medusa
, opposite the ferry terminal (closed Tues), is not cheap but is very good; or economize at the friendly
Ristorante Il Cantinone
, Via Roma 55 (closed Mon), a popular locals' joint where wood-panelled walls add to the marine flavour and the antipasto is unmissable. In Chiaioella, you could try
Il Galeone
, right by the bus stop between the bay and the beach (no closing day). A number of
cafA©-bars
in Marina Grande serve drinks and
gelati
- try
Capriccio
at Via Roma 99 or
Alexander
at no. 54 - while the
Number Two
on Via LibertA , which leads off Via Roma, is the main
nightclub
.
