lira
, and at time of writing there were around L3000 to the pound sterling, and L2000 to the US dollar. However, Italy is one of eleven European countries that have decided to adopt the European single currency - the
euro
. At the moment you can only make paper transactions in the new currency, but you will notice shops, restaurants and other businesses list prices in euros as well as lira. Euro notes will be in circulation from January 1, 2002, and are scheduled to replace the lira six months later.
