What to wear is almost as important as when to come. Sturdy comfortable shoes are essential - you're going to be doing a lot of walking - and, if you're here during the summer, you should wear loose, cool clothes, and a sunhat. Bear in mind that some sights - the catacombs, the Domus Aurea, even some churches - can be unlit and cold, even when it's warm outside, so dress in layers; bear in mind also that even on the hottest days women are required to cover up to enter many churches. Be frugal with your possessions when sightseeing, and only take out as much money, or jewellery, as you can bear to lose; pickpockets can be rife during the high season.
