Salerno's train station lies at the southern end of the town centre on Piazza Vittorio Veneto. City and local buses pull up here; those from Paestum and further south arrive and leave from Piazza della Concordia, down by the waterside nearby; buses from Amalfi or Naples use the SITA bus station at Corso Garibaldi 119. Ferries and hydrofoils from Amalfi, CA pri and Positano arrive in the harbour.

For information, there's a tourist office on the corner outside the train station (Mon-Sat 9am-2pm & 3-8pm; tel 089.231.432, eptinfo@xcom.it ), which has free maps, hotel lists and information on the Salerno area. If you're staying, there's a youth hostel about fifteen minutes' walk south from the station at Via Luigi Guercio 112 (tel 089.790.251; dorms L12,000/a?¬6.20, singles L20,000/a?¬10.33, doubles L35,000/a?¬18.08, triples L45,000/a?¬23.24, quads L60,000/a?¬30.99; closed 10.30am-5pm; curfew 1am); follow Via Torrione left out of the station and then do a left under the rail line up Via San Mobilio; it's the second street on the right. Alternatively, the town's cheaper hotels are handily placed along (or just off) Corso V. Emanuele, which leads north into the town centre from the station: try friendly Santa Rosa , at Corso V. Emanuele 16 (tel 089.225.346; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48); you can use the Internet at the language school one floor down in the same building (Mon-Sat 9am-2pm & 3.30pm-8pm; L3000/a?¬1.55 per hour). Right by the station is the more upmarket Plaza , Piazza Vittorio Veneto 42 (tel 089.224.477, fax 089.237.311; L90,000-120,000/a?¬46.48-61.98).
