SA?ssari's main tourist office is at Viale Umberto 72 (Mon-Fri 9am-1.30pm & 4-6pm; tel 079.231.331), but there is a handier one next to the museum at Via Roma 62 (same hours except closed Fri afternoon; tel 079.231.777). Staying in SA?ssari can be a real problem, and you'd do well to phone ahead to ensure availability. If you don't mind the somewhat primitive, bathless rooms, the most characterful of SA?ssari's two central budget options is the tumbledown Sassari Hotel, at Viale Umberto 65 (tel 079.239.543; up to L60,000/a?¬30.99), but the lacklustre Giusy (tel 079.233.327; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48), conveniently near the station on Piazza Sant'Antonio, has more comfort. The next step up is quite a leap, the relatively luxurious Frank , Via Armando Diaz 20 (tel 079.233.327; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47), in the modern town. On the other hand, you'll find a good range of restaurants in town, such as Il Posto , a friendly trattoria in the new town at Via Enrico Costa 16 (closed Sun), where you can eat moderately priced pastas and pizzas. In the old town, the basic Da Peppina , in VA­colo Pigozzi (closed Sun), an alley off Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is a good place to sample the local speciality of horsemeat, or try the cosier but pricier L'Assassino on Vicolo Ospizio Cappuccini, a lane on the other side of the Corso (closed Sun). At FainA? Sassu , off Piazza Castello at Via Usai 17 (closed Sun & June-Sept), the menu is confined to another sassarese speciality: fainA? , a sort of pancake made of chickpea flour, either plain or cooked with onions, sausage or anchovies. Further along this street, Pizzalmetro serves pizzas to eat in or take away (closed Sun), or sit outside Da Bruno , a cheap pizzeria on Piazza Matteotti (closed Wed).
