In terms of quality and choice, the Ocho Rios roster of organized tours is second only to Montego Bay. Scores of comparably priced operators (most with in-hotel desks) will whisk you off to Dunn's River Falls or the Marley mausoleum at Nine Mile. More interesting excursions include tubing along the White River from Spanish Bridge (3.5hr; US$49), and five-hour jeep safaris (US$60 including lunch), both offered by Chukka Cove (tel 876/972-2506). Horse-riding trips (3hr; US$55) also are run by Chukka, as are mountain-bike tours (3hr; US$50). An innovation at Chukka is gliding ; trips cost US$90 for twenty minutes. Costs for all trips cover return transportation from Ochi and refreshments. Hooves (tel 876/972-0905) offers horseback trail rides around the Seville Great House at St Ann's Bay that include swimming your horse (2hr 30min; US$60); they also offer inland hacks (2hr "Bush Doctor" ride, US$50), and will do private rides on request. Ochi isn't far from the Blue Mountains , and Blue Mountain Tours (tel 876/974-7075 or toll-free on 1-800/982-8238) will transport you up into the mountains for a spectacular sixteen-mile downhill bike ride to a waterfall near Buff Bay on the north coast (US$89 including transfer, brunch, lunch and refreshments).

Yet more adventurous possibilities include the exhilarating ATV (or quad bike ) tours in the St Mary interior offered by Wilderness Resorts (tel 876/974-5189 or 4613). The valley tour (1hr; US$60) goes through the lush landscape that surrounds the Wilderness farm, while the country tour (2hr; US$103) takes you to Spanish Bridge with stops for swimming and photos. All trips include transport to and from your hotel, and can be combined with other Wilderness activities such as fishing, hiking and horse riding.
