As many of Ochi's restaurants aim to please the foreign palate, Italian, Indian, Chinese and American fare is available in addition to the Jamaican staples, and there are a couple of excellent vegetarian options. There are several patty shops around town, including a branch of Juicy Beef by the clocktower, as well as numerous fast-food joints. For Jamaican food on the hop, head to the excellent Island Grill at 12 Main Street (opposite Sandcastles hotel), for jerk chicken and fish. Jerk stands also set up around the clocktower in the evenings.

Bibibips 93 Main St. Set back from the road, with tables overlooking the sea, this place serves excellent fish dishes as well as coconut curry chicken, seafood crepes, vegetable stir-fry, Rasta pasta, and all the usual Jamaican favourites. Service is excellent and prices are fair.

CafAŠ Mango Main Street, opposite the entrance to Jamaica Grande . Semi-open-air and inexpensive diner in a shady, central location. Jamaican and American breakfasts, also calamari, nachos, chicken wings, salads, some Mexican dishes, pasta and pizza. A nice spot for a long lunch or an outdoor dinner.

Evita's Eden Bower Road tel 876/974-2333. The best-advertised pasta on the north coast, served on a gingerbread verandah overlooking the bay. Huge choice of starters, salads and soups; main courses include pasta - even "Lasagne Rastafari" with ackee, callaloo and tomatoes - and seafood. Expensive, but worth the splurge.

The Healthy Way Ocean Village Plaza. Energetic and efficient vegetarian take-away, with a couple of tables, offering veggie/tofu burgers and patties, soups, Ital juices, fruit salad, cakes and a different main dish each day.

Jack Ruby's 1 James Ave. Reliable, affordable Jamaican food - ackee and saltfish or callaloo with all the trimmings, fish and lobster any style, Ital stew, cow foot, oxtail and chicken.

Little Pub 59 Main St tel 876/974-2324. American and Jamaican breakfast and lunch in a roadside cafAŠ with a juice bar on site. Dinner - from filet mignon or surf 'n' turf to lobster thermidor - is dished up in the "entertainment area". Prices range from moderate to expensive.

Ocho Rios Village Jerk Centre just before the roundabout on DaCosta Drive. Renowned for the consistently good and sensibly priced jerk pork, chicken, fish and barbecued spare ribs as well as the piped dancehall, which draws in an evening crowd of drinkers.

Passage to India Soni's Plaza, 50 Main St tel 876/795-3182. Rooftop restaurant serving excellent Indian cuisine. The menu is pretty comprehensive. Breads are particularly good, as are the lassi yogurt drinks and desserts.

Peppers 3 James Ave. Popular place for a late supper; fish is served any which way, with bammy, festival or rice and peas. The outdoor seats are perfectly placed for soaking up the James Avenue shenanigans. Closed Tuesday.

Toscanini Harmony Hall tel 876/975-4785. A ten-minute drive east of the centre under the eaves of pretty Harmony Hall, and easily one of Ochi's best. Service is great, and the relatively expensive menu features all the Italian classics. Vegetarians are well served, and the puddings are sublime. Closed Monday.

Veggie Kitchen Shop 11, Island Plaza, Main Street. Delicious dairy-free vegetarian cooking: plantain porridge, ackee breakfasts, soups, patties, salads, veggie burgers and full hot meals for lunch or early dinner. Great natural juices. Closed Sunday.
