Flights arrive at Ken Jones Aerodrome , six miles west of town in St Margaret's Bay, from where a taxi into town costs around US$10. Buses and minibuses from Kingston (3hr 30min) and Montego Bay (5hr) pull in at the main terminus by the seafront on Gideon Avenue, or by the town's central square on West Street (which also serves as the main taxi rank ). If you're driving , the A4 highway runs straight into and through the town. The Jamaica Tourist Board office (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; tel 876/993-3051) is upstairs at the City Centre Plaza on Harbour Street, although it just has a few brochures on hotels and attractions.

To get your bearings, head up to the Bonnie View Hotel (signposted off Harbour Street at Port Antonio's eastern outskirts), overlooking the entire town and providing great views. You can walk between the handful of sights in Port Antonio, while most places of interest outside town (and all of the beaches) can be reached by public transport . Shared taxis run along the main road as far as Long Bay; you'll pay around J$40 to Dragon Bay/Frenchman's Cove, J$50 to Boston Bay, and J$60 to Long Bay.

Since you'll want to get out of town a lot, renting a car is a good idea. Try Eastern Car Rentals at 26 Harbour St (tel 876/993-3624 or 2562) or Derron's, east of town at Drapers (tel 876/993-7111, fax 993-7253); both companies will deliver to your hotel. If you're just planning a single day trip it can work out cheaper to use a taxi; the main rank is in the central square. Alternatively, call the cheerful Mr Palmer (tel 876/993-3468 or 772-9648), the Port Antonio taxi co-operative (tel 876/993-2684) or JUTA (tel 876/993-2684)
