Drinking and nightlife

The few places to head for a drink in town are often very quiet. The oceanfront Port Antonio Marina on West Palm Avenue (tel 876/993-3209) is a breezy and pleasant place with a happy hour on Fridays and occasional live entertainment , and the terrace at the Bonnie View Hotel offers the town's best harbour views. Just out of town and right by the sea on Allan Avenue, the friendly K-S Kozy Knook is the archetypal Jamaican drinking hole; a similar scene is found in town at The Hub at 2 West Palm Ave.

With none of the bad-boy posturing of Kingston or the resort slickness of the north coast, clubbing in Portie is a laid-back and supremely enjoyable experience. Top spot has traditionally been the Roof Club at 11 West St (nightly; J$100), while options are Club Xtacy , on the top floor of the Village of St George, and the slightly more upmarket Crystals , at the western end of West Palm Avenue. All play dancehall, reggae, R&B, hip-hop and a splash of soca.
