Seafood, apples and apple products fill Aomori's food halls and souvenir shops. Among the more appetizing
speciality foods

hotate kai-yaki
, fresh scallops from Bay grilled in their shell and served with a dash of miso sauce, and
jappa-jiru
, a winter cod-fish stew, are both worth a try. Shinmachi-dori, the main shopping street, and around the station, are good places to look for
restaurants
, though ASPAM also has a number of reasonable options. In the evenings, some of Aomori's famous
shamisen
(traditional stringed instrument) players give dinner concerts at
Jintako
.
Jintako , 1-6 Yasukata (tel 0177/22-7727). A cosy restaurant where you can hear a concert of shamisen music after the meal. Reservations are essential and it's not cheap: A?5000 or A?6000 including food. Daily 6.30-11.30pm, closed first and third Sun of the month. Kakigen , Shin-machi 1-chome. Small, casual restaurant specializing in hotate and other seafood, though also serving tonkatsu , donburi and noodle dishes at reasonable prices. Look for its moss-green noren (hanging curtain) just east of the Sun route Hotel on Shinmachi-dori. Daily 10.30am-8pm. Nandaimon , Shin-machi 1-chome. This cheap and cheerful Chinese-Korean eatery serves good-value yakiniku , grilled hotate and other seafoods. Lunch sets start at A?750. Daily 11am-10pm. Nishi-mura , 1-5 Yasukata (0177/73-2880). Choose from a broad range of inexpensive local cuisine including hotate and jappa-jiru , or set meals from A?1300. There's a picture menu and some staff speak a little English. Reservations recommended in the evening. Open Mon-Sat 11am-2pm & 4.30-10pm. Sakatsubo , 2F, 1-8-1 Shin-machi (tel 017/722-7217). Incredible sashimi, grilled fish, tempura and other vegetables at very reasonable prices. Try the set menu for around A?1500 which comes with two main dishes, soup and rice. Also stocks quite a selection of regional sake, from A?500. Look out for the Nomura Liquor store on your right as you walk along Shinmachi-Dori from the station; Sakatsubo is located right above it. Mon-Sat 4.30-11pm.

. Their handy English menu lists an unusual range of tasty pasta dishes - cod's roe, sea urchin,
kimchi
