Banks and foreign exchange
You'll find foreign exchange desks in Higo Bank and Fuji Bank, beside the Tsuruya department store, and Daiwa Bank near the Kumamoto-jo-mae tram stop. Higo Bank also has a branch just north of Kumamoto Station.

Ferries
Kyushu Shosen (tel 096/329-6111) operates hourly ferries from Kumamoto Shin-ko to Shimabara (1hr; A?590). To get to the port, take a bus from Kumamoto Station (35min; A?420).
Festivals
Kumamoto's main event is the Fujisaki Hachiman-gu autumn festival (Sept 11-15). On the final day there are two processions, morning and afternoon, when some 20,000 people parade through the streets in historical garb.

The Kumamoto National Hospital (Kokuritsu Kumamoto Byoin; tel 096/353-6501) is conveniently located immediately south of Ninomaru park.
