If you're heading from Kyoto direct to Kansai International airport , it's a good idea to reserve your transport in advance. Limousine buses depart from outside the Avanti department store on the south side of Kyoto Station (hourly 5am-9pm; 1hr 45min; A?2300; tel 075/682-4400); tickets are available from the ground floor of the nearby Keihan Hotel . Reservations are essential on JR's Haruka Limited Express trains, for which you can buy tickets either at an ordinary JR ticket office or in Kyoto City Air Terminal (9.30am-5.30pm), in the first basement of Kyoto Station. Ticket holders on international flights with JAL and JAA can also check in here (6am-5pm), as long as you're travelling by Haruka train; you need to check in at least three hours before your flight departs. Finally, remember that there's a A?2650 departure tax at Kansai airport.

Long-distance buses depart from terminals either side of Kyoto Station. JR Highway buses and other services to Tokyo, Nagoya and Kanazawa depart from a stand on the north side of the station, while Keihan Bus uses a terminal on the south side, outside the Keihan Hotel . Keihan services cover Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Fukuoka, Tokyo and Kanazawa.
