To vist some of Kyoto's most famus palaces and gardens it's necessary to apply in advance. In most cases this is a simple procedure and well worth the effort.

Tours of the Imperial Palace , Sento Gosho , Katsura Rikyu and Shugaku-in Rikyu are all handled by the Imperial Household Agency (Mon-Fri 8.45am-noom & 1-4; closed hols & Dec 28-jan 4; tel 075/211-1215). Their officer is located on the west side of the Imperial Park, near Imadegawa subway station. It's best to book your tout at least two days in advance, though you can often visit the Imperial Palace itself on the same day. All tours are free and conduced in Japanese, with the exception of the Imperial Palace where there are may be an English guide. Note thet anyone under 20 years old (still a minor in Japanese law) has to be accompanied by an adult when visiting the Sento Gosho, Katsura Rikyu or Shugaku-in Rikyu. Finally, take you to the office and also for the tour itself, in case it's requested.
