Kyoto is best appreciated at a leisurely pace, but if you're really short of time JTB's Sunrise Tours (tel 075/341-1413) offers English-speaking guides on their
city tours
; prices start at ?5300 for a half-day tour of selected Sights. Tours start from the lobby of the
New Miyako Hotel
south of Kyoto station, with pick-up services available from some of the city's other major hotels. Alternatively, Keihan Bus and City Bus run a more varied programme at slightly cheaper prices, but all in Japanese. Tickets for all these tours are available through travel agents or at the bus terminals. If you fancy a more personal tour, the English-speaking Johnny Hillwalker (otherwise known as Hiroka Hajime) takes small groups on a slow amble through southern Kyoto from Higashi-Hongan-ji to Kiyomizu-dera (March-Nov Mon, Wed & Fri; ?2000 per person; tel 075/622-6803 or tel 090/1890-0096).
