Beef, wild boar, ayu (sweet fish) and shiitake mushrooms from the mountains, clams, flying fish and citrus fruits - Miyazaki has a good spread of edible delicacies. There's also the local sushi - retasu-maki - containing shrimp, lettuce and mayonnaise, and chicken Namban, deep-fried, succulent chicken morsels with tartare sauce. The best choice of restaurants is in the streets either side of Tachibana-dori, but the Gazet building, outside Miyazaki Station, also has an interesting selection. The city's energetic nightlife district is squeezed into the backstreets west of Tachibana-dori, behind the Bon Belta department store and south to the Washington Hotel .

Alberobello , 3-4-26 Tachibana-dori Higashi. Cheerful, jazz-playing pizza parlour down an alley one block south of Yamakataya department store. Choose from a list of imaginative toppings on their English menu, with pizzas from A?1000 and slightly cheaper pasta dishes. Daily except Tues 11.30am-9pm.

Beat Clap , Tachibana-dori Nishi. Approaching this large, downbeat disco in a car park behind the Washington Hotel , look out for their old, graffiti sign with an unfortunate misspelling. Inside you'll find the biggest dance floor in Miyazaki. A?1000 cover charge including one drink. Sat only, from 9.30pm.

Cannabis , Tachibana-dori Nishi. No cover charge - and no cannabis - at this very relaxed reggae bar in the midst of Miyazaki's entertainment district. Daily 9am-5/6am.

Ogura , Tachibana-dori Higashi. A cafAŠ-style restaurant offering good, cheap food, but no atmosphere, tucked down an alley behind the Yamakataya store. The house special is chicken Namban (A?900), or they do burgers, fried pork cutlets, curry rice and other comfort food in generous portions. Daily 10am-8.30pm.

Saien , Tachibana-dori Higashi. Vegetarian haven on a back-alley east of Tachibana-dori, with well-priced lunch deals (A?700), fresh juice, brown rice and tofu burgers. Service can be slow. Daily 11.30am-2.30pm & 5-9pm.

Sajowan , 4-6-23 Tachibana-dori Higashi. Popular Indian serving Miyazaki's spiciest curries - let them know if you like it fiery - and plumpest nan breads. The daily lunch is A?600, or they do sets from A?1000. Daily 11am-9.30pm. Closed 1st and 3rd Wed evening of each month.

Suginoko , 2-1-4 Tachibana-dori Nishi. One of the city's most famous restaurants, at the south end of Tachibana-dori, serving tasty country cooking in elegant surroundings. Try their lunchtime Kuroshio teishoku (A?1000) or bento sampler (A?1600). Evening meals start at A?4000. Mon-Sat 11.30-2pm & 4-11pm.

Zurian , 3-1-3 Tachibana-dori Nishi. Underneath the Washington Hotel , this popular, modern izakaya specializes in seafood straight from the tank. There's a huge picture menu to choose from, with yakiniku , fries, salads and other standard izakaya fare. You can eat well for around A?2000. Daily 5pm-midnight.
