fiogf49gjkf0d As you'd expect, with plenty of off-duty GIs and footloose young Japanese tourists and locals, Naha's entertainment scene is far from dull. If you want to hear
live music
, in particular funky Okinawan pop and traditional sounds, head to
Chakra
on Kokusai-dori (7pm-2am; A?2500-3000; tel 098/869-0283), a place owned by Kina Shoukichi, a local music legend. Also worth checking out - although it's 15km north of Naha in neighbouring Ginowan city - is
Live House Shima Uta
(Tues-Sun 8pm-midnight; A?1500), on Route 58 near Ginowan Kaihama Park. The place is run by another local music luminary, China Sadao, who brought the all-female group Nenes to world attention and the concerts here get rave reviews.
Late-night dance
clubs
include
Pow Wow
, in the same building as
Chakra
, where most events are A?1500 (or US$15) including one drink;
Bump
, also on Kokusai-dori, close to the OPA building, which plays techno on Fridays for A?2500 and hip hop and R&B on Saturdays (entry A?2000); and the smart, popular and expensive
Club Cielo
on the seventh floor at the western end of Kokusai-dori (the entrance is just up the hill opposite the prefectural assembly hall).
Naha is also a good place to catch performances of traditional
Ryukyu court dance
, particularly if you coincide with the weekly show in the Higashi-machi Kaikan, just north of the Kokuba-gawa. Performances are usually on Tuesday evening (8pm; A?2500), but check with the tourist office for the current schedule, and note that there's A?500 discount on advance tickets. The alternative is a more expensive dinner show where you'll pay from A?3000 for a meal, sometimes including
tonda-bun
- beautifully presented royal hors d'oeuvres
. Although somewhat touristy,
Yottsu-take
on Kokusai-dori (2 shows nightly 6.30pm & 8pm; 40min) provides an enjoyable night out and the food isn't bad. The staff are friendly and they have a printed English explanation of the food and dances. Other dinner/dance venues include another
Yottsu-take
, 2-22-1 Kume (tel 098/866-3333), and
Urashima Kaikan
, 14-8 Wakasa (tel 098/861-1769), both in the backstreets west of Highway 58.
