New Chitose Airport (tel 0123/23-0111), 40km southeast of Sapporo, is the main gateway into Hokkaido and the connecting point for flights to other destinations on the island. From the airport, the fastest way to Sapporo is on the frequent JR train (?1040), which runs from Shin-Chitose Kuko Station in the basement of the airport to Sapporo Station in around thirty-five minutes. The bus is cheaper (?820), but takes at least twice as long to arrive at the Chuo Bus Terminal, one block north of the TV Tower at the eastern end of Odori-koen. Okadama Airport (tel 011/781-4161), 8km northeast of Sapporo, is only for flights within Hokkaido, and a regular bus (?310) runs from here to opposite the Chuo Bus Terminal.

Arriving by train , you'll pull in at busy Sapporo Station, six blocks north of Odori-koen. Long-distance buses terminate at the Chuo Bus Terminal and the Sapporo Station Bus Terminal on the south side of the train station beneath the Sogo department store. The closest port to Sapporo is Otaru, served by ferries from Honshu and also with a service to the Russian island of Sakhalin.
