Arrival, information and getting around

The majority of visitors to Sendai arrive at the main JR
station
on the east side of town, near the local and long-distance
bus terminals
. The city also has an international
airport
, with flights from Seoul, Beijing, Honolulu and Hong Kong as well as domestic services. From the airport, hop on a limousine bus bound for Sendai Station (40min; A?910).
Ferries
from Nagoya and Hokkaido (Tomakomai) dock at Sendai Port, northwest of the city, which is served by local buses (40min; A?490).
Sendai's main information centre (daily 8.30am-8pm; tel 022/222-4069, fax 222-3269) is located on the station's second floor, with English-speaking staff who can help with city maps and hotel bookings. Alternatively, there's the more relaxed Sendai International Centre (daily 9am-8pm; tel 022/265-2471), out near the castle, which also runs an English Hotline (same hours; tel 022/224-1919), while the municipal authorities run a reasonably useful Sendai Home Page ( www.city.sendai.jp ).
The best way of
getting around
Sendai is by
local bus
- ask the information centre for their list of useful routes. The minimum fare is A?150, payable to the driver as you exit, or there's a one-day pass (A?620), though this is only valid within the central zone and not really worth it for most visitors. Sendai has one
subway
line, running north-south, which is useful for the
Dochuan Youth Hostel
. The system's easy to use, with announcements and signs in English; to reach the subway from Sendai's JR station, follow the signs through the basement of the Seibu store. Other useful information
