Eating

Most visitors to Yokohama head straight for Chinatown to eat, but there's also a huge variety of other world cuisines to choose from, including plenty of Japanese restaurants , of course. The shopping malls such as Landmark Plaza, Queen's Square and Shinko-cho's World Porters are the best hunting grounds, and all the major department stores have a restaurant floor, of which Soggo's has the greatest choice.

Capricciosa , 2F, 1-31 Motomachi. Lively outlet of this cheap-and-cheerful pasta and pizza chain, which continues to be popular for its generous portions. You'll eat well for less than ?2000 per person. Daily 11.30am-10pm.

Colombo , 2F, 2-88-1 Motomachi. Watch the world go by from this breezy, cafe-style Sri Lankan restaurant on Motomachi shopping street. Weekday lunches at under ?1000 represent the best deal; otherwise, reckon on at least ?2000 per head for a good feast. Daily 11.30am-9/10pm.

Hard Rock Cafe , 1F, Queen's Tower A, 2-3-1 Minato Mirai. The rock and burger chain continues to draw the crowds with its lively cross between a bar and a restaurant. Also does salads, sandwiches and daily lunchtime specials, and there's a half-price Happy Hour on weekdays from 4-7pm. Mon-Thurs & Sun 11am-11.30pm, Fri & Sat 11am-4am.

Heichinrou , 149 Yamashitacho (tel 045/681-3001). Large, popular Cantonese institution where the weekday lunch deals offer the best value (from ?1400). They also do dim sum from ?700 per plate (up to 4.30pm), while evening menus start at ?6000. Get there early or be prepared to queue, especially on weekends. Otherwise, ask a Japanese speaker to help you reserve. Daily 11am-10.15pm.

Manchinrou , 153 Yamashitacho (tel 045/681-4004). Another famous old name, this time serving Guangdong cuisine. Choose carefully and eating here need not break the bank, with noodle and fried-rice dishes starting at around ?1100 and lunch sets at ?2700, though evening-course menus (from ?4600) are less affordable. English spoken. Daily 11am-10pm.

Peking Hanten , 79 Yamashitacho. Right beside Chinatown's eastern gate, this highly decorated Beijing restaurant is unmissable. However, it's fairly low-key inside, and has well-priced lunchtime menus from around ?1000. Their late opening hours and English menu are also plus points. Daily 11.30am-2am.

Rikyuan , 2-17 Masagocho. Traditional soba joint tucked down a backstreet, two blocks east of JR Kannai Station. The menu includes donburi as well as various soba dishes; prices start at around ?850. Mon-Sat 11am-8.30pm.

Shei Shei , 138 Yamashitacho. Casual Szechuan restaurant serving an excellent-value set lunch on weekdays (?500) or choose from their picture menu. There are only a handful of tables, so at busy times you'll be asked to share. Daily 11.30am-2pm & 5-8.30pm.

Suro Saikan Honkan , 190 Yamashitacho. Popular for its reliable Shanghai cuisine. Weekday lunch sets start at under ?700 and courses from around ?3000, but count on at least ?4000 in the evening. Daily 11.30am-10pm.

World Food Court , 1F, World Porters, 11 Shinko-cho. A selection of self-service fast-food restaurants - burgers, pizzas, salads, curry and Chinese - around a central seating area. It's better than it sounds, and perfect for a group with different tastes. If none of those appeal, there are several proper restaurants on this floor, including a branch of Tokyo's To the Herbs and, on the fifth floor, Fashion Broadway .

Yamate Jubankan , 247 Yamatecho. Pleasant French restaurant in a pretty clapboard house opposite the Foreigners' Cemetery. There's a proper restaurant upstairs and a less formal dining area on the ground floor, where you can snack on a sandwich or croque. Set lunches at around ?3000. In July and August they run a popular beer garden. Daily 11am-9pm.
