Drinking and nightlife

Despite the city's overwhelmingly Muslim population, you won't go thirsty. There are several nightclubs too, though you might not guess as much during the day. Always check bills carefully as mistakes are increasingly common.

If you don't fancy joining the clubbing throng, then a stroll around the generally safe Old Town will uncover one or two coffee-sellers serving black kahawa from traditional high-spouted jugs. A perfect accompaniment to the coffee is perfumed almond halwa (which in Kenya means the gelatinous Indian variety, not the sesame sweet of the Middle East); of the best places to buy it is Fatma Halwa Shop at the corner of Langoni and Old Kilindini roads, which is open till 1am daily except Sunday.
