Mombasa is increasingly important as a safari hub , though for safaris further out, it's easier and cheaper to organize a trip from Nairobi. Renting a car for an independent safari, prices tend to be a little cheaper in Mombasa than in Nairobi if you deal with a local company (Ksh3400-4500 per day for a small saloon rented over a week, including insurance and waivers), but the big multinationals remain expensive (Ksh4000-5000).

There are a number of safari possibilities from Mombasa apart from an overnight at the Shimba Hills National Park. Expect to pay $150 and upwards for a one-day safari (5am pick-up from your hotel) to Tsavo East, including lunch at Voi Safari Lodge . Air safaris, even to the Mara, are also quite feasible, though much more expensive (upwards of $500 for two days and one night), although only spending one night you run a higher risk of disappointing game drives. If you're going to Lamu , don't bother with inclusive arrangements: just take a flight there and sort out accommodation when you arrive. Many of the companies listed below also offer half-day city tours of Mombasa ($25-35), and day-trips to places like Malindi and Gedi ($100 combined) and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. Things are much cheaper if you take public transport - full details are given throughout this section. The same applies to the much-touted overnight stays in Zanzibar: compare the $350 asking price with the regular $226 return airfare (including departure taxes).
