Klaipeda's tourist office is just off Teatro aikste at Tomo 2 (summer Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9am-3pm; winter Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 26/412186, kltic@takas.lt ). Klaipeda in Your Pocket (4Lt, from the tourist office or bookstores) is your best source of information about what's going on in town. Litinterp , Simkaus 21/8 (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm; tel 26/216 962, www.litinterp.lt ), have central private rooms (A?5-10/$8-16), and they can also help with rooms in Nida. Klaipeda Travellers' Guesthouse , Turgaus 3-4 (tel 26/214 935, oldtown@takas.lt ; A?5-10/$8-16), is a centrally located, friendly hostel. Reasonable mid-range hotels include the Fortuna , Poilsio 64 (tel 26/348028; A?15-20/$24-32), a small pension 4km south of the centre best booked in advance. Nearer the centre and equally good is Prusija , Simkaus 6 (tel 26/255 963; A?15-20/$24-32), a wonderful family-run pension with plenty of character. There's an unofficial campsite at Giruliai, 8km north of Klaipeda next to the Pajuris sanatorium on Slaito. There are no facilities at all but it's free (shuttle bus #8 from the centre).

Good places to eat in the Old Town are Galerija Peda, Turgaus 10, whose tasty food looks as arty as the gallery it occupies; and Buru Uzeiga , Kepeju 17, which serves up Lithuanian meat-and-potato favourites in homely wooden surroundings. For drinking , Kurpiai , Kurpiu 1, is a pub-like place that also functions as the best jazz bar in the Baltics; while Skandalas , 10 minutes' northwest of the Old Town at Kanto 44, is an in-your-face American-themed bar.
