Sarawak Tourist Association
(STA) is next to the Sarawak Steamship Building on Main Bazaar, at the junction with Jalan Tun Haji Openg (Mon-Thurs 8.00am-12.45pm & 2-4.15pm, Fri 8.00-11.30am & 2.30-4.45pm, Sat 8am-12.45pm; tel 082/240620). Sarawak Visitor Centre (Mon-Thurs 8am-4.15pm, Fri 8am-4.45pm, Sat 8am-12.45pm; tel 082/410942), overlooking the padang at Jalan Mosque, has the booking desk of the National Parks and Wildlife Office, which issues permits for Semengoh, Bako, Gading and Kubah parks (tel 082/248088).
Many Kuching
tour operators
run tours to Iban longhouses on the Lupar, Lemanak and Skrang rivers, 200km east of Kuching, for around RM100 a day per person, although reductions are available, depending on the size of the group. They will also arrange trips in other parts of the state, including Gunung Mulu Park. Recommended operators include Asian Overland, 286a first floor, Westwood Park, Jalan Tubuan (tel 082/251163), which does good longhouse trips near Kuching and on the Batang Ai river system, as well as treks in Mulu National Park; Borneo Adventure, 55 Main Bazaar (tel 082/245175), whose main plus is a visit to a great jungle lodge near Batang Ai; Tour Exotica, 1st Floor, 1-3 Jl Temple (tel 082/254607), which runs one-day tours to a Bidayuh longhouse (RM140 for two); and Tropical Adventure, 17 Main Bazaar (tel 082/413088), which organizes trekking around Bario, exploring Mulu and trips to Iban longhouses.
