Kuching is the best place in Sarawak to buy just about anything, although it would be unwise to stock up on tribal textiles and handicrafts here before visiting Sibu, Kapit or the longhouses in the interior. For handicrafts and souvenirs , check out Sarakraf, 14 Main Bazaar, for baskets, textiles and ironwork; Sarawak Batik Art Shop, 1 Jl Temple, for fine Iban pua kumbu textiles; Tan Brothers, Jalan Padungan, close to the junction with Jalan Mathies, for baskets, carvings and bags; Talan Usan, Jalan Ban Hock, for superb Penan and Orang Ulu crafts; and Yeo Hing Chuan, 46 Main Bazaar, for interesting carvings and other handicrafts. Adventure Images, 55 Main Bazaar, has the best postcards in Sarawak. Mohamad Yahiah & Sons, with branches in the Holiday Inn and Bell Books in Sarawak Plaza, offers the biggest range of books in Sarawak, and also stock the best maps of the state. Sky Book Store, 57 Jl Padungan, and Star Books, 30 Main Bazaar, are good for geographical, cultural and anthropological material.

For a typical local shopping experience head out to the weekend market at the Jalan Satok/Jalan Palm junction in the southwest of the city. Stalls here sell everything from rabbits to knives, and one alley is dedicated to Dayak produce and handicrafts. The market runs from Saturday afternoon until 2am, then from 6am to noon on Sunday; beware of pickpockets. Take bus #4a or #4b from the Matang Transport Company bus station, or from outside the post office (5min).
