Sampling the spicy dishes of Nonya cuisine is a must in Melaka, with its emphasis on sour herbs like tamarind, tempered by creamy coconut milk. Usual opening hours are 9am-11pm unless otherwise stated.

Capitol Satay , Jl Bukit China. Experience satay celup, where you take your pick of assorted fish, meat and vegetables skewered on sticks and cook them in a spicy peanut sauce at your table.

Restoran D'Nolasco , Medan Portugis. A Mediterranean atmosphere with oriental food such as crabs in tomato and chilli sauce with soy. Around RM20 a head.

Gluttons' Corner , Jl Merdeka. More a collection of permanent restaurants than food stalls, this is the city's highest profile eating area. Prices are high, however, and service poor. One of the better restaurants is Bunga Raya, whose local seafood is popular with the locals.

Heeren House , 1 Jl Tun Tan Cheng Lock. This stylish, air-conditioned cafAŠ offers Nonya lunches at the weekends for RM15 and very reasonably priced local Portuguese food.

Jonkers Melaka , 17 Jl Hang Jebat. In a beautiful Peranakan house, this cafAŠ is also a gift shop and art gallery. Good for vegetarians - set meals, including Nonya cuisine and desserts, start at RM16. Open 10am-5pm.

Restoran Kerala , 668 Taman Melaka Raya. Cheap and cheerful South Indian food in a sparkling clean establishment. Excellent banana-leaf curries as well as tandoori set meals for about RM5.

Long Feng Chinese Restaurant , Renaissance Melaka Hotel, Jl Bendahara. Excellent Cantonese and Szechuan dishes in a classy setting. It's not cheap, though, at around RM25 per dish.

Ole Sayang , 198-199 Jl Taman Melaka Raya (tel 06/283 4384). A moderately priced Nonya restaurant, with Peranakan decor. Try the beef goreng lada, in a rich soya-based sauce, or the ayam lemak pulut, a spicy, creamy chicken dish; both cost around RM7. Open 11.30am-2.30pm & 6-9.30pm, closed Wed.

Sri Lakshmi Villas , 2 Jl Bendahara & Sri Krishna Bavan next door have reliable south Indian thali s with as many top-ups as you can eat for RM4 a go. Good for vegetarians.

Restoran Teng Yuan , corner of Lorong Bukit China and Jl Banda Kaba. Vegetarian Chinese restaurant with inexpensive tofu and bean dishes in a buffet.
