Campeche's Central Camionera , with first- and second-class terminals, is 2km from the colonial centre, along Av Gobernadores. To get to the centre, turn left outside, cross the road and take a city bus marked "Centro" or "Gobernadores". Local buses leave from the market just south of the city walls. If you arrive at the airport , about 10km southeast of town, you'll have to take a taxi.

Within the city, even-numbered streets run parallel with the sea, starting for some reason with C 8, just inside the ramparts; odd-numbered streets run inland. The zA?calo, Parque Principal , is bordered by C 8, C 10, C 55 and C 57. Almost everything of interest is gathered within the old walls.

Campeche's tourist office , in the Plaza Moch Couoh on Av Ruiz Cortines, opposite the imposing government palace (daily 9am-3pm & 6-9pm; tel & fax 9/816-6767 or 816-5593, turismo@campeche.gob.mx ) is helpful and friendly and there's usually someone there who can speak English. Be sure to pick up the free tourist magazines, with articles about what's going on in and around town and in the state. They also have a list of independent guides (speaking various languages) who lead tours of the city and archeological zones, though you might be expected to provide the transport; Betty Mena Pacheco is recommended (tel 9/811-0733). Other tourist information booths (at the bus station and Baluarte de San Pedro at the northwest corner of the walled city) have details of activities and tours, maps and may offer advice on accommodation.
