fiogf49gjkf0d Other than taking a stroll round the city, the most pleasant way to learn a little about Campeche is to take one of two picturesque
tram rides
, with informed commentaries in Spanish and English, from their starting point in the zA?calo. The
Tranvia de la Cuidad
takes in most sites in the walled city, passing through the narrow streets of the neighbourhood of San Roman, home to the church containing the Black Christ, a two-metre ebony sculpture brought from Italy in 1575 and paraded through the streets on Campeche's feast day (Sept 14). The other tram ride,
El Guapo
, runs along the seafront and up to Fort San Miguel. Both 45-minute trips cost US$2 and depart several times a day 9am-7pm, though set times are flexible to say the least and trams only leave if there are twenty people or more on board.
