Restaurants abound in the centre of Campeche, especially along C 8 and C 10. Seafood , served almost everywhere, is a good bet; try the pan de cazon (a kind of shark lasagne made with layers of tortillas) or shrimps in spicy sauce. The cafA© in the centre of the zA?calo serves excellent coffee and home-made ice cream and Campeche's market , just north of the walled city, is surrounded by comedors offering cheap and tasty comida corriente.

Casa Viejo , C 10, above the zA?calo's colonnade. Cuban-owned restaurant with well-appointed balcony overlooking the main square and classy international cuisine. Superb, though not for those on a budget.

Iguana Azul , C 55, opposite La Parroquia . Gorgeously decorated colonial house with small restaurant specializing in Creole and Campeche dishes and large bar with leafy courtyard.

La Palapa , Av Resurgimento (30min walk along the malecA?n from the city centre towards Fort San Miguel). Large seafront bar right on the water, where delicious antonijos are served with every drink.

La Parroquia , C 55 no. 8. Traditional, family-run restaurant; good value and very popular with locals. Open 24hr.

Marganzo , C 8 no. 262. Overpriced tourist trap with staff in costumes and live music - though the food's decent enough and it's usually full. The place if you're looking for a gringo party atmosphere.

Restaurant Campeche , C 57, next door to the Hotel Campeche . Large unfussy restaurant with extensive menu - local specialities and Mexican food in general - and reasonable prices.

Restaurant Miramar , C 8 and C 61. Campeche's best seafood; pricey, but worth it.
