Eating and drinking

There's plenty of choice of places to eat and drink near the hotels. For good, inexpensive food, particularly breakfasts, try the Plaza Cafe , at Mateos between Gastelum and Miramar. El Charro , Mateos 454, is a well-established joint serving roast chicken and plain Mexican food at reasonable prices until late, while Las Brasas , nearby, is similar. The bohemian Cafe Cafe , Mateos and Gastelum, is considerably more low-key, with backgammon and, at weekends, live folk, jazz or blues from both Californias. Pueblo Cafe-Deli , Mateos and Ruiz, is a stylish and popular bar also serving good food. Cafe Tomas , Mateos 335, prides themselves on their excellent international coffees and chocolates. Or, for a more romantic if pricey Italian dinner, head to Angelo's Ristorante (tel 6/178-1970) east of Hussong's .

The stalls at the fish market, by the harbour, sell fish tacos and other seafood at a fraction of the price of the fancy restaurants that line Costero. If you do want to sit down and don't mind missing out on the views, for excellent, plain seafood, try Mariscos Playa Azul , Riveroll 113, or El Palmar at Mateos and Obregon. Among the numerous Chinese restaurants is the upmarket China Land , at Riveroll 1149, by the bus station. For perhaps a less tourist filled night, try the increasingly popular discotheque Octopus , Riveroll 225 at Segunda.

For places to drink , Hussongs Cantina at Ruiz 113, opened in 1892, is a spit-and-sawdust watering hole that has become a bit of a landmark and thrives largely unchanged, much appreciated by the regulars who come here day and night. Papas and Beer is another Ensenada staple, where lively crowds pack the downstairs restaurant by day and party by night upstairs.
