Pachuca is known in Mexico for pastes , a local derivation of the Cornish pasties once made by Cornish miners working in nearby Real de Monte. They still come tradicional (or tipo InglAŠs ), filled with ground meat, onion and potato, as well as with fillings such as chicken mole . Though they differ in shape, they're closely related to typical Mexican empanadas, which are usually sold in the same shops stuffed with tuna, pineapple or even rice pudding. You'll find bakeries selling pastes all over the region, and even at the bus station. These might sustain you for a short visit but on longer stays you'll want to visit restaurants such as El Antiguo Huasteca , Matamoros 11, on the east side of the zA?calo, which does good breakfasts and typical Mexican antojitos (all US$3). For espressos, croissants and burgers, pop down the street to Mi Antiguo CafAŠ , Matamoros 115; and in the evening either make for the family-style Mirage , Guerrero 1210, where you might try the local tacos mineros (chicken tacos with salsa and cheese), or Alex Steak , Glorieta RevoluciA?n102 (tel 7/713-0056), where enormous and beautifully prepared steaks are served for around US$15. There's little in the way of diverting nightlife, but the Mirage does have a cosy bar .
