fiogf49gjkf0d Approaching Taxco, you'll arrive on Av J.F. Kennedy, the main road that contours around the side of the valley at the bottom of town. From Av Kennedy several streets wind up through the houses, all more or less converging on Taxco's zocalo, the
Plaza Borda
, where Santa Prisca towers above all other buildings. Just below and east of Plaza Borda is the tiny
Plazuela de Bernal
, from where several streets fan out; while to the west, the narrow Cuauhtemoc runs back to
Plazuela de San Juan
, where you'll find several hotels and restaurants.
Taxco has two
bus stations
, both on Av Kennedy and both with fairly frequent services to Mexico City, Cuernavaca and Acapulco. They're about 1km apart, but from either it is about a ten-minute steep walk or US$2 taxi ride from Plaza Borda. To get in from the Estrella Blanca terminal, cross the road and turn right up the hill and then left to climb even more steeply past the church of Santa Veracruz to the centre. Arriving at Estrella de Oro, head straight up C de Pilita, the steep alley directly across from you, until you come, on your right, to the Plazuela San Juan, and from there down Cuauhtemoc to the zocalo.
All the information you really need is a map of the town, which can be picked up at the bus stations, obviating the need to visit the small
tourist office
(daily 9am-8pm; tel 7/622-0798) inconveniently sited on Av Kennedy at the very northern end of town, where the remains of an aqueduct named Los Arcos crosses the road. There are several
banks
with ATMs on the streets surrounding Plaza Borda, along with numerous casas de cambio, including Argentu on Plazuela de San Juan, which offers good rates and civilized opening hours (Mon-Fri 9am-3pm & 5-7pm, Sat 10am-2pm).
To check your
email
at low rates there's
Aereanet
(daily 10am-midnight) at Benito Juarez 12, just north of Plaza Borda.
