Drinking and nightlife

Nearly all the action in Tijuana happens close to Revolucion, where numerous nightclubs pump out soft rock or dance-oriented rap. English is the lingua franca, dollars are the currency of choice, and the playlist is solidly North American. Most places are open until at least 2am. With competition fierce, cover charges are rare and drinks are often offered two for the price of one: walk along Revolucion and pick the most appealing joint on the night. More traditional Mexican bars , as well as those featuring "exotic dancers", cluster around 1st and Constitucion and on Revolucion at 6th.

The pedestrianized Plaza Fiesta (see "Eating") offers the most obvious alternative to the hard-sell party atmosphere of the main drag. Though smaller and slightly calmer, this area, crammed with bars and clubs, offers more real variety and certainly feels more "Mexican".

Diamante Disco , Revolucion and 1st. The least intimidating of the seedy Latin bars but still not recommended for unaccompanied women.

El Perro Azul , Plaza Fiesta. Arty, bohemian place with live acoustic music, art exhibitions and a mixed, friendly clientele. Open till 2am.

Las Pulgas , Revolucion 1127 opposite jai alai. Modern Latin disco with a huge dance floor.

People's Sports and Rock , Revolucion 786 at 2nd. Consistently one of the better-fun bars, with a slightly harder edge to the music. Be prepared for the bar staff moving to pour tequila down your throat in an effort to loosen the purse strings.

Salon de Baile , 6th between Revolucion and Madero. Don't be put off by the lurid wall paintings, this is the real thing: a traditional dance hall with an almost Caribbean feel playing salsa, cumbia and norteno. Look for the big red star.

The Cave , Revolucion 1137 between 5th and 6th. Much the same as all the other tourist-oriented places, but at ground level so you can see what you are letting yourself in for.
