, the capital of the state, does its best to deny most of Chiapas' attraction and tradition - it's a fast-growing, modern and crowded city. Though not actually in the highlands, it's the main gateway from central Mexico and a major transport hub; you may well end up having to stay the night. It's not a bad place - there's a fascinating
zoo
and some excellent
museums
to fill some time - but there's no call to stay longer than necessary, and your best bet may be to carry straight on through to San Cristobal.
