The city has two train stations - "Den Haag HS" (short for Hollands Spoor) and about 1km to the north "Den Haag CS" (Centraal Station). Trains stop at one or the other and sometimes both; the latter is the more convenient, being next to the VVV (Mon-Sat 9am-5.30pm, July & Aug also Sun 10am-2pm; tel 0900/340 3505; www.denhaag.com ). Accommodation can be quite expensive. The VVV has a small stock of private rooms (?10-15/$16-24/€18-27), or there's a cluster of seedy but reasonably priced hotels just outside Den Haag HS station: the cheapest is Aristo , Stationsweg 164-166 (tel 070/389 0847; ?10-15/$16-24/€18-27), although you get a far better deal 4km north of the centre at the beach resort of SCHEVENINGEN , where hotels are more plentiful and a little cheaper; it's a short ride on tram #1/#7/#9 from Den Haag CS, or tram #8/#11 from Den Haag HS. In Scheveningen, try Bali , Badhuisweg 1 (tel 070/350 2434; ?20-25/$32-40/€36-45) or one of the group on the seafront road Zeekant that includes the comfortable Aquarius , Zeekant 107 (tel 070/354 3543; ?25-30/$40-48/€45-54). There are three hostels in Scheveningen: Scheveningen , Gevers Deynootweg 2 (tel 070/354 7003; ?10-15/$16-24/€18-27); Marion , Havenkade 3a (tel 070/350 5050; ?10-15/$16-24/€18-27); and pleasant HI City Hostel , Scheepmakerstraat 27 (tel 070/315 7878, www.njhc/denhaag ; ?10-15/$16-24/€18-27). For camping , the best and largest site in the area, Kijkduinpark , Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan 450 (tel 070/448 2271) lies just behind the beach at KIJKDUIN (bus #4 from CS or bus #26 from HS).

There are plenty of cheap places to eat around the town centre: Greve , Torenstraat 138, north of Grote Kerk, has snacks and full meals; Pinelli , Dagelikse Groenmarkt 31, serves pizzas; whilst Indonesian snacks are served at Brasserie Surakarta , Prinsestraat 13. There are several options on the streets around Denneweg and Frederikstraat, just north of Lange Voorhout, amongst them the popular vegetarian De Dageraad , Hooikade 4. In Scheveningen, the Haven harbour has some excellent places to eat fresh fish by the waterside: try the inexpensive Bistro aan de Haven , Lelykade 15, or the more upmarket Ducdalf , Lelykade 5. For drinking , aim for the studenty bar Zwarte Ruiter in the busy square south of the Hague's Grote Kerk. For Internet access try Internetcafe, Elandstraat 48 (tel 070/363 6286).
