Trondheim is the first major northbound stop of the Bergen-Kirkenes coastal boat ( Hurtigrute ), which docks about 600m behind and to the north of Sentralstasjon, the combined bus and train terminal . Sentralstasjon is situated just over the bridge from the town centre, which occupies a small island at the mouth of the River Nid. The tourist office is bang in the middle of town on the main square, the Torvet (mid-May to Aug Mon-Fri 8.30am-6/8/10pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4/6/8pm; Sept to mid-May Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; www.taas.no ). They issue a very useful free city guide, change money and book private rooms for a fixed rate of 350kr for a double, plus a 30kr fee. There's a large HI hostel at Weidemannsvei 41 (tel 73 87 44 50; A?10-15/$16-24), twenty minutes' hike east from the centre out over the romantic Bakkebru bridge; bus #63 runs out in that direction from Sentralstasjon. Another inexpensive choice is the InterRail Centre , Elgesetergate 1 (tel 73 89 95 38; A?5-10/$8-16; late June to mid-Aug), providing basic bed and breakfast in the unusual round red house which serves as the student social building in the winter; it's a twenty-minute walk from Torvet or take bus #41, #42, #48, #49 or #52.

More convenient alternatives include Pensjonat Jarlen , Kongensgate 40 (tel 73 51 32 18; A?15-20/$24-32), with frugal rooms at bargain prices; the Rainbow Gildevangen , SA?ndregate 22b (tel 73 87 01 30; A?35-40/$56-64), a chain hotel with comfortable, modern rooms in an imposing old stone building, a short walk northeast of Torvet; and the Rainbow Trondheim , Kongensgate 15 (tel 73 50 50 50; A?35-40/$56-64), a big and popular hotel offering well-maintained modern double rooms at reasonable rates. The city centre is best seen on foot, but if you're staying on the edge of town, take advantage of the brightly coloured municipal bicycles that are available from bike racks all over the centre; they are free, but you need 20kr to unlock them - as per a supermarket trolley.

For eating , the cafAŠs and restaurants in the area of Bakklandet are a good choice, the groovy Ni Muser , Bispegata 9a, footsteps from the cathedral, is a relaxed and fashionable little cafAŠ serving tasty snacks and meals based on a variety of European cuisines (daily 11am-midnight); the Dromedar , Nedre Bakklandet 3, is also fashionable, a cafAŠ-bar offering tasty meals with a wholefood slant. Credo , A?rjaveita 4, has a very good restaurant serving innovative seasonal food on the ground floor, and a bar downstairs. The town has an active nightlife ; the place to be right now is the Nedre Elvehavn area, especially the very popular venue/bar/cafAŠ BlAĻst in Dokkgata 8, and several other cafAŠ options.
