Crime in Arequipa

fiogf49gjkf0d
The worst reports from Arequipa in recent years have concerned a spate of "strangle-muggings" wherein tourists are jumped and strangled to the point of fainting before being robbed. Although rare, it's best to avoid walking along empty streets late at night, especially if alone. Much more common is pickpocketing , which is most likely in the Central Market area and on Jerusalen or San Juan de Dios. If you have anything stolen, report it to the Tourist Police . If you have problems getting them to believe you, call the Tourist Protection Service (tel 054/212054), or contact your consulate.
