Arequipa's central market is one of the biggest and liveliest in Peru, though it's also a prime spot for pickpockets. A couple of blocks down from Santa Domingo, it sells all sorts of food, leather work, musical instruments and even llama and alpaca meat, as well as offering an excellent range of hats, herbs and cheap shoe repairs. You can also get a selection of fruit juices, including some combining with eggs and dark, sweet stout beer. Other places for top-quality artesania and alpaca goods are El Zanguan, Santa Catalina 105; the stalls and shops around the courtyard at Centro Artesanal Fundo El Fierro, on the second block of Grau; and in the Pasaje Catedral behind the cathedral. For a good selection of colonial and older antiques , the Antiques and Art shops at Puente Grau 314b and Santa Catalina 204 are excellent. The tastiest local sweets can be bought from Iberica, Jerusalen 136. For picnic food, there's a good supermarket at Portal Municipalidad 130, on the Plaza de Armas. The best bookshop is the ABC Bookstore, Santa Catalina 217.

Camera film and development is available centrally from Fotos J. Cano, San Juan de Dios 103; Casa Glave, Portal de la Municiplaidad 122, Plaza de Armas; Foto Jerusalen, Jerusalen 503; and Foto Alvis, Portal de Flores 140, Plaza de Armas. For reliable camera repairs , go to Fernando Delange, 303 Zela, near the north side of Santa Catalina. Camping equipment is best from Campamento Base, Jerusalen 401b, where they stock a good range of tents, sleeping bags and all other essentials, plus maps. They're also a good contact for expert guides. Turandes, Calle Mercaderes 130, rents out equipment and sells maps. Regional maps are also sold at the Instituto de Cultura.
