Tourist information offices in Lima are rather dispersed and many of the commercial tour companies are actually better geared up for this service, notably Fertur Peru, who also offer good city tours , as do Lima Vision. Free weekday morning tours (free; call for details) are also offered by the municipalidad office of Informacion Turistica, Calle Los Escribanos 125, Plaza Mayor (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm & Sat 10am-6pm; tel 427-6080 or 427-4848), in Lima Centro , who provide good information and occasional maps. In Miraflores there's a small tourist information point (daily, 9am-9pm), based in the central Parque 7 de Junio; the Central de Informacion y PromocAon TurAstica, Avenida Larco 770 (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm; tel 446-2649, 446-3959); and El Allyu, a cultural centre at Calle San Martin 537 (tel 446-0385, fax 241-7587, webmaster@allyu-peru.org, www.allyu-peru.org), which has a wide range of useful material. The South American Explorers' Club has good information, including maps, listings and travel reports, available to its members. In the last resort you might want to try Promperu , the official tourism arm of the Ministerio de Industria y Turismo, Calle 1, Urbino Corpac (tel 427-6080), who have recently published a series of excellent information booklets and sheets covering Lima and other destinations - the problem is that they're based in the Ministery building, which is not exactly tourist-friendly as it's neither easily accessible nor strictly open to the public.

If you're planning to explore Lima in depth, you might want to get hold of the GuAa de Transportes, a cheap bus map ($1.50), which you can buy from most of the stalls around Plaza San Martin and Avenida Nicolas de Pierola. The best city map is the pricey Lima Guia "Inca" de Lima Metropolitan ($13), but it is increasingly difficult to obtain; more readily available, from the stalls around Plaza San Martin and most bookshops, the Lima Plano 2000 street map is comprehensive, but you may need a magnifying glass to read it.
