fiogf49gjkf0d However you arrive in Puno, you'll be immediately affected by the altitude and should take it easy for at least the first day, preferably for the first two, although if you arrive from Cusco or Bolivia, the chances are you will already be accustomed to the altitude. Arriving
by bus
you are most likely to end up somewhere central on JirA?n Tacna or a few blocks east towards the lake, along Avenida Titicaca or JirA?n Melgar. Colectivos to and from Juliaca and
Juliaca Airport
(Aeropuerto Manco Capac) also use JirA?n Tacna. If you're coming in from Arequipa or Cusco by train, you'll arrive at the
train station
(information on tel 054/351041) on Avenida la Torre. Taxis and motorcycle rickshaws leave from immediately outside the station and will cost less than $2 to anywhere in the centre of town. The main
port
, used by boats from Bolivia (contact Capital del Puerto, Avenida El Sol 725, for information), as well as the Uros Islands, Taquile and Amantani, is a fifteen to twenty minute walk from the plaza de Armas down, straight up Avenida El Puerto, crossing over JirA?n Tacna, then up JirA?n Puno.
The helpful and friendly
tourist information office
is at JirA?n Lima 585 (Mon-Fri 7.30am-7pm & Sat 8am-1pm) and can provide photocopied town plans, leaflets and other information. The
tourist police
, JirA?n Deusta 538, are very helpful and also give out free maps.
