Barrio Fiesta , 3rd Level, SM City shopping mall (tel 032/232 0640). Barrio Fiesta, with its colourful array of native dishes and snacks, is one of dozens of restaurants in the enormous SM City.

CafA© Adriatico , F Ramos Street (tel 032/253 0405). Sister establishment of the hugely popular place of the same name in Malate, Manila. Filipino and European food and merienda (snacks) served in a bohemian environment. A good place to cool off with coffee or beer.

Max's Restaurant , Fuente Osmena (tel 032/253 4327). This friendly chicken chain is ubiquitous in the Philippines. Fuente Osmena is an interesting area to stroll around at night, with plenty of other restaurants, hotels and bars.

Our Place , Corner of Pelaez Sreet and Sanchiangko (tel 032/254 7916). Friendly hangout of the Cebu male expat community. Less popular with women and locals, although that's not to say they won't be made welcome. Steaks, curries and burgers for around P100 and San Miguel for P30. Info from the barflies on everything from diving to collecting seashells.

Visayan Restaurant , 126 V Guillas St (tel 032/253 8631). Satisfying and inexpensive native and Chinese dishes, including dim sum, soups, fried rice, bean curd and good fish.
