fiogf49gjkf0d Both A?vora's
bus station
and
train station
are about a kilometre out of the old town, though there are regular green buses from the former that run to
PraA§a do Giraldo
, centre of A?vora's surprisingly lively social scene. Here you can find the
tourist office
(summer Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat & Sun 9am-12.30pm & 2-5.30pm; winter daily 9am-12.30pm & 2-5.30pm; tel 266 702 671) and a couple of outdoor cafA©s. All the cheaper
places to stay
are within five minutes' walk, but A?vora's tourist appeal pushes prices way over the norm. Best options are
PensA?o Os ManuA©is
, just west of the square at Rua do Raimundo 35 (tel 266 702 861; A?20-25/$32-40/a?¬36-45);
PensA?o Invicta
, Rua RomA?o Ramalho 37a, overlooking SA?o Francisco (tel 266 702 047; A?10-15/$16-24/a?¬18-27); and
PensA?o Giraldo-Anexo
at Rua dos Mercadores 15 (tel 266 702 833; A?5-10/$8-16/a?¬9-18). A?vora's new
hostel
(tel 267 444 848; A?15-20/$24-32/a?¬27-36, dorms A?5-10/$8-16/a?¬9-18) is just off PraA§a do Giraldo at Rua Miguel Bombarda 40. If you are looking for comfort try the converted sixteenth-century mansion
Solar Monfalim
, at Largo da MisericA?rdia 1 (tel 266 750 000; A?20-25/$32-40/a?¬36-45). If you're stuck for a room, the tourist office will sometimes arrange accommodation in
private homes
. The
campsite
(tel 266 705 190) is a couple of kilometres out of town on the AlcA?A§ovas road; bus #5 goes there eight times daily from PraA§a do Giraldo (except Sun).
Restaurants
abound in the centre: for inexpensive food try
Adego do Neto,
Rua dos Mercadores 46 or the homely
O PortA?o
, on Rua do Cano alongside the aqueduct. For slightly more you could sample the outstanding Italian food at the enormously popular
Pane & Vino
, Patio do Salema (entrance on Rua Diogo Focardo).
Oficin@
at Rua da Moeda 27, is an easy-going
bar
that also offers
Internet access
for a?¬2.50/hr.
