fiogf49gjkf0d The
train station
is across the river, fifteen minutes' walk from the centre via the new swing bridge in the marina; the
bus station
is a bit closer in, a block back from the main Avenida dos Descombrimentos. The
tourist office
is inconveniently located about fifteen minutes from the centre on the first main roundabout on the Portimao road (summer daily 9.30am-12.30pm & 2-5.30pm: winter closed Sat pm & Sun; tel 282 763 031). They can help find a room for you, but most economical are the
private rooms
(?10-15/$16-24/€18-27) touted by little old ladies at the bus station - though the tourist office advise against it and always refer to them as "witches". Two of the more convenient and pleasant
pensions
are the
Pensao Caravela
at Rua 25 de Abril 16 (tel 282 763 361; ?15-20/$24-32/€27-36) and the
Residencial Mar Azul
, nearby at no. 13 (tel 282 769 143; ?20-25/$32-40/€36-45). There's a
hostel
at Rua de Lancarote de Freites 50, off the main Rua Candido dos Reis (tel 282 761 970; ?15-20/$24-32/€27-36, dorms ?5-10/$8-16/€9-18), which also has
Internet
connection (€4/hr). Lagos has two
campsites
, close to each other on the main Sagres road - the
Campismo da Trindade
(tel 282 763 893) and the larger and more attractive
Imulagos
(tel 282 760 031). In season a regular bus service marked "D. Ana/Oporto de Mos" connects the bus station with both, and
Imulagos
provides its own free transport from the train station. On foot, follow the main road beyond the fort.
The centre of town is packed with
restaurants
. Some of the better ones are the cheap, good-quality fish and shellfish places by the market, where Rua das Portas de Portugal meets the main avenue.
O Cantinho Algarvio
, Rua Afonso d'Almeida 17, has a wide range of Algarve dishes at good prices; in the same street
Casa do Ze
is popular. For authentic
piri-piri
chicken try the tiny and inexpensive
O Franguinho
at Rua Luis de Azevedo 25. For a more expensive treat,
Dom Sebastiano
, on the pedestrianized Rua 25 de Abril, is among the town's finest restaurants, where meals run to around €20.
Mullens
bar
, Rua Candido dos Reis 86, serves meals until 10pm, plays jazz, salsa and soul on the sound system and stays open until 2am.
Hideaway
, Travessa 1? de Maio 9, just off Praca Luis Camoes, is a cosily atmospheric bar, also open till 2am.
Eddies
, Rua 25 de Abril, is popular with the energetic and they also have an
Internet
connection during the day (€4/hr). For contemporary club sounds, try
Phoenix
, at Rua 5 de Outobro 11, or for something a bit funkier,
Reciclagem
on Rua Marreiros Neto; both stay open until 4am.
Lagos is the western terminus of the Algarve rail line, so for Sagres take one of the nine daily
buses
. Many of them call at the train station just after the arrival of the trains.
