Drinking and nightlife

San Juan has a very healthy nightlife, to say the least. In addition to the lively bars at restaurants like the Parrot Club, Dragonfly and Amadeus , there are numerous venues around the city where you can grab a drink or dance the night away to Puerto Rico's famous salsa or merengue - delivered live or by a DJ - or perhaps a little hip-hop or underground.

Asylum 1320 Avda Ponce de LeA?n, Santurce tel 787/723-3258. San Juan's most progressive club pumps underground dance music to a hipster crowd.

Bar Rumba 152 Calle San Sebastian, Old San Juan tel 787/725-4407. Live salsa Thursday to Sunday. Young crowd, compared to most salsa joints. You can get a quick lesson in salsa or rumba.

BorinquA©n 4800 Avda De Isla Verde tel 787/268-1900. The atmosphere and location - along a service road - are unremarkable, but the beer is home-made here in San Juan's only brew pub.

CafA© ? (CafA© Pregunta) 157 Calle San Jose, Old San Juan tel 787/723-5467. Things get pretty rowdy here with merengue and salsa most nights. Also live bomba on Wednesdays.

Club Laser 251 Calle Cruz, Old San Juan tel 787/725-7581. A good mix of locals and tourists gather to dance into the night at this hip-hop club near the port.

Cups 1708 Calle San Mateo, Santurce tel 787/268-3570. This lesbian bar has a low-key atmosphere and a good mix of types and nationalities.

El Batey across from El Convento , Old San Juan. This dark, grungy fixture, open until 6am, is usually mobbed. Has a very "local bar" feel, despite the number of outsiders.

Eros 1257 Avda Ponce de LeA?n, Santurce/Miramar tel 787/722-1131. Basically a gay club, but all persuasions come here to dance on Saturday nights. Music is salsa and New York-style house. Also dance, drag and strip acts. Open to 4am on weekends.
