Although St Petersburg has less nightlife than most of its Western counterparts, there is lots of potential for a wild night out. Of the permanent clubs and discos , some are just plain tacky, others have a brash and decadent appeal and feature themed nights, spectacular lights, casinos and raunchy floorshows, while others offer that spartan, underground atmosphere of warehouse clubs.

St Petersburg is increasingly attractive to foreign stars, but the chances of you catching anyone famous here are still minimal. For Russians, the city is associated with several home-grown legendary bands and is the most hip place in the country - a sort of Russian Manchester or Seattle.

Clubbing aside, St Petersburg has a wide variety of cultural events, such as classical concerts , ballet and opera : for ballet, it's best to avoid performances in the Hermitage Theatre or at the Mussorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre, unless desperate, and stick to the Mariinskiy. English-language films can sometimes be seen at Avrora, Nevskiy pr. 60; Barrikada, Nevskiy pr. 15; and Crystal Palace, Nevskiy pr. 72. For details of what's happening, whatever your preference, check the listings in the free English-language papers - The St Petersburg Times (Friday edition) and Pulse .
