Practicalities

With the exception of a couple of rather downtrodden hotels, Charlestown is utterly lacking in accommodation options. If you're on a budget, though, the Sea Spawn Guest House on Main Street (tel 869/469-5239; US$25-50), near Pinney's Beach, will suffice, with eighteen small rooms equipped with private bath and portable fan. Restaurants are more numerous. CafA© des Arts is a delightful place serving up sandwiches, quiches and strong coffees on the ground floor and gardens of Hamilton House, across from the Museum of Nevis History. Eddy's , south of the pier, on Main Street, dishes out fish and chips and the like on a second-floor verandah; it turns into a karaoke bar on Wednesday nights and a 1970s disco on Fridays. Closer to the pier, the seaside terrace at Unella's is an appropriate backdrop for the fine seafood on offer; red snapper and lobster make star appearances, but don't come cheap. Set back from the main road, on Chapel Street, Le Bistro is a cosy place with daily fish specials that's also popular for its Friday happy hour . For beach picnics, stock up at The Nevis Bakery on Happy Hill Alley.
