SoufriA?re

Officially established in 1746, SoufriA?re is the oldest town in St Lucia and was the island's capital under French rule. Naturally framed by hills and dominated by the looming, conical Pitons - twin volcanic peaks thrusting straight out of the sea to the south of the town - SoufriA?re's deep bay is extremely picturesque, particularly when viewed from the hilly coastal roads as you enter town from the north or south. This unspoiled allure has often drawn the attention of film producers: scenes from Superman II, Water , and the more recent White Squall were shot in and around town.

Taxis and buses heading north to Castries and south to Vieux Fort and for the east coast cluster around the town square and the waterfront; the latter is also the place to hop aboard convenient water taxis , which traverse the area servicing all of the nearby bays, many of which are difficult to access from the land without your own car. Water taxis (tel 758/454-5420) also offer sightseeing trips to Castries and back. At US$350 for four, the trips are expensively exotic. One-way trips (no sightseeing) for four or more people cost around US$90-100 for four.
