Bratislava has an airport (letisko StefanAk; tel 07/4857 3353), but at present there are very few direct flights to or from the rest of Europe, other than the likes of Moscow and Prague, plus the odd domestic flight to Kosice and Poprad. From the airport take bus #61 to the main train station, or else catch the ASA bus, which runs a shuttle service to and from the ASA office on StA?rova, timed to coincide with the flight schedule. Part of the reason for Bratislava airport's underuse is the proximity of Vienna's Schwechat airport, from which there's a regular bus service that drops passengers at the main bus station in Bratislava.

A short distance north of the city centre is Bratislava's spruced-up main train station or HlavnA? stanica , where most international or long-distance trains pull in. Once you've arrived, go down to the tram terminus below and, having bought your ticket from one of the machines on the platform, hop on tram #1 into town. Some trains, particularly those heading for destinations within west Slovakia, pass through Bratislava's NovAŠ Mesto station, linked to the centre by tram #6 and to the main train station by an irregular train connection. Buses usually arrive at the main bus station, or AutobusovA? stanica , on MlynskAŠ nivy, fifteen minutes' walk east of the city centre. Trolleybus #210 will take you across town to the main train station; #211 goes past Hotel FA?rum on Hodzovo nA?mestie. Bratislava's tourist office , BIS, is at KlobucnAckA? 2 (Mon-Fri 8am-7pm, Sat 9am-2pm; tel 07/5443 4370; www.isnet.sk/bis ): it's good for general queries and getting hold of a map and the monthly listings magazine, Kam v Bratislave ; it also books accommodation for a 50Sk fee. There's an additional, smaller office in the main train station.

For news and current affairs, plus a few listings , one publication worth getting is the weekly Slovak Spectator ( www.slovakspectator.sk ; 30Sk).
